The Scariest Tablet Repair Mistakes

A broken tablet makes it impossible to work, stream, shop, or participate in social media, which quickly becomes inconvenient and frustrating for you. Even more inconvenient, though, is ignoring the problem with your tablet and allowing it to worsen before taking it to a professional.

The good news is—most tablet damage is repairable and affordable, especially if you come to Cellular Zone! You can count on us for cheap iPad repair.

In this blog, we’ll discuss common issues with tablets and ways to prevent these issues from worsening.

Cracked Screen

The most common tablet or iPad repair issue we see is a cracked or shattered screen, typically from dropping the tablet. Time is of the essence with this issue; the longer you wait to have your screen repaired, the more it could crack and break. Eventually, it might even become unresponsive to touch. Fortunately, cracked screens are relatively simple to repair or replace, so as long as you get to a repair shop as soon as it breaks, your tablet will likely recover.

Broken Camera

Yes—tablet cameras take great photos too! That’s why it’s so frustrating when your tablet’s camera isn’t working. Whether your photos are coming out blurry or the camera is simply failing to start, the most efficient way to get it back up and running is by taking it to a professional tablet or iPad repair shop.

Sometimes turning the power on and off will do the trick, but if that doesn’t work, talking to a tablet repair expert is the most efficient next step.

Broken Home Button

If you own an older version of the iPad, you might run into the problem of a broken home button. If the home button is stuck, missing, or simply not working, it may be time to visit Cellular Zone to get it replaced.

Before stopping by our store, make sure you thoroughly clean on or around the home button in case the problem is just dirt or dust stuck in the button. If the home button still doesn’t work after cleaning it, bring it to us for a quick and affordable replacement! Don’t worry about iPad repair prices. We pride ourselves on our budget-friendly services.

Water Damage

Did you accidentally spill your drink on your tablet? Or drop it in the sink? Water damage is another time-sensitive issue because the longer your tablet soaks in moisture, the more internal and external damage it will face because of that moisture. So don’t hesitate to take it to an iPad repair shop ASAP!

To prevent future water damage, just remember that just because your tablet is water-resistant, that doesn’t mean it is waterproof!

Broken Battery

Old or broken batteries can be detrimental to your device. If your tablet won’t hold a charge or gets extremely hot when you use it, the battery should be replaced before it ruptures. Again, don’t wait to get your battery replaced, not just because of the inconvenience that a broken battery causes, but also because of the potential dangers of the battery leaking chemicals either into your device or outside of it.

iPad Repair

Thankfully, a broken battery is easy to detect and, in the right technician’s hands, fairly easy to replace.

Luckily for you, Cellular Zone handles each of these common tablet issues and can have your device working like new in no time. So go ahead and google “iPad repair store near me” or “iPad repair near me” to find a professional technician today!

Students: What to Do When Your Laptop Breaks

School is back in session – and you’re already exhausted. Chances are, your laptop or desktop is too. Even if you’ve invested in a MacBook 15” Pro with a packed RAM of 16 GB, that space fills up quickly with Zoom Meetings, study guides, and PowerPoint slides. And when you’re not running out of storage, you’re dealing with a slowed-down hard drive, maybe even apps that keep quitting on you. So what do you do when you’ve already poured your life savings into textbooks and getting the laptop in the first place? What are your most inexpensive options?

With so many Apple and other brand stores closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, it can be challenging to find a reliable laptop repair shop to handle your repairs. However, several computer repair shops, such as Cellular Zone, are still open and serving their communities as essential businesses. So when you’re looking for “MacBook Pro repair near me,” your local computer or PC repair store will likely have some prime solutions for you.

Keyboard Replacement

Keys fall out or lose small parts underneath – it happens. These kinds of repairs can sometimes be simple fixes requiring more determination and patience than tech skill. If you purchased your laptop new from the manufacturer, it should come with a service manual detailing how to replace keyboard keys. Before unscrewing everything and possibly losing small pieces, be sure to gather the parts and tools you’ll need for the repair. You’ll also want to set up a workspace in which to operate on your device.

If you’ve taken a crack at it – or have decided that’s not for you! – and couldn’t quite figure out a solution, drop by a Cellular Zone store for professional and timely help you can count on.

New Hard Drive

Screen Replacement

A variety of mistakes can land you in need of a screen repair, or even screen replacement. For this type of repair, you’ll want to find the best local computer repair shop near you. Once you’ve had the experts fix your screen, consider investing in some screen protection. Phone cases won’t cut it; we suggest buying a screen protector as well.

Liquid Damage Repair

When you knock your coffee over on your laptop screen, quick action is in order. First, unplug the power cord and pull out any other cords. Sending juice to a wet laptop is the last kind of problem you want on your hands. Lightly dab at the moisture on the computer, making sure none has seeped into the vent holes at the top of the keyboard. Finally, flip the laptop over and prop it up, screen facing down.

How to Repair a Computer with Water Damage

From keyboard functionality issues to overheating problems, Apple computer repair needs are fairly common. Whether it’s a MacBook, a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or a desktop, Apple has run quite a record of malfunctions and mistakes. Many of the models with errors have been recalled, but not before a fair number of users have purchased them. Water damage, however, doesn’t discriminate between make and model. Chromebooks, Surface Go, and Dell laptops are all vulnerable to the effects of water damage, and the ensuing need for computer data recovery.

So what happens when you reach for your lunch and knock your open water bottle onto your new 13” MacBook Pro?

You’ll definitely want to bring your Apple computer or laptop to professional computer repair technicians. However, before you run in screaming, “fix my laptop!” there are a few steps even the non techies among us should take soon after the accident occurs.

Turn off your laptop. COMPLETELY. (Then don’t touch the button again).

While “turning it off, then on again” legendarily works in most situations, this isn’t one of them. Simply hold the power button to shut down your computer completely, then let go and be careful not to bump the button again. Water damage, even a small amount, is deadly enough to your computer. Just a few drops of H2O in your logic board could kill your laptop or Chromebook if you turn the power back on immediately.

Water Damage Laptop

Keep water from dripping into the vent holes.

At the top of your keyboard, you’ll notice an opening that runs almost the length of the keyboard (pictured above). These vent holes release hot air to escape so that your computer doesn’t overheat. Allowing water to slip into these crevices can severely damage your laptop, so be sure to gently dab any water with a paper towel or soft cloth.

Unplug your charger, as well as any other connected USB drives or adaptors.

While turning off your computer prevents your MacBook from charging at full speed, the last thing you want is damage to your high voltage charging circuit. Unplugging your charger will keep external electricity from entering your computer and combining with the water. Adaptors and USB drives pose the same risk, so be sure to remove any of those external “limbs” from your Chromebook or MacBook! Water damage repair fees might have you wondering where to buy a used laptop, so be sure it doesn’t come to that – act fast!

Now give yourself a pat on the back – you’ve just taken the best immediate action to keep your computer alive. It’s now time to find a local expert computer repair shop. Before you settle on the nearest one, be sure to look into the warranty options for computer repairs. You’ll also want to look at the price and reviews for the business.

Local Computer Repairs

If you’re wondering, “Where can I find laptop repair near me?” we’ve got good news for you! Cellular Zone staffs San Antonio’s best device repair technicians at 3 convenient locations: Dezavala, Bulverde, and Potranco. May you never spill a drink or drop your computer in water, but if you do, head over to Cellular Zone for MacBook pro water damage repair!

How to Find the Best Computer Repair Shop Near You

The 1st and 2nd generations of the MacBook offered many perks, seeming durability and long-lasting design among them. Unfortunately, these and other MacBooks often require keyboard repairs. Back in 2015 when Apple released the 15” MacBook Pro, the company announced a recall due to an overheating battery. Then in 2017-2018, a few non Touch Bar 13” MacBook Pros with SSDs (solid-state drives) were proven to have data loss issues. Later in 2018, newer models of the 13” and 15” MacBook Pro line with Intel i5, i7, and i9 cores showed significant overheating, causing Apple to release a supplemental software update in order to rectify the situation.

So while Apple offers a lot in its line of laptops, we know that owning an Apple computer comes with a hefty chance that you’ll need a computer repair. Before you hit up the nearest and flashiest-looking store, however, be sure your local computer repair shop checks out against this authentication list,

Price

You’ll want to find out what the shop will charge. Consider labor costs as well as how far you may have to dig into your wallet to cover parts replacements. Call some of the local computer repair shops you’re checking out, and ask for an estimate on your repair. Be specific about the make and model of your PC; some Apple parts and repairs can rack up quite the bill. The price a computer repair shop quotes you may not include parts costs, so be wary.

Warranty

Any repair is only as good as the warranty the shop offers. A longer warranty certainly projects confidence in the shop’s service and expertise, while a shorter warranty period may imply poorer quality.

Service Options

While most repair companies require that you drop off your PC and pick it up later, some businesses offer mobile repair services. As you narrow your list of expert computer repair shops, consider checking if each shop offers this option.

Computer Repair Expertise

Area of Expertise

Many computer repair shops specialize in PC repairs, but most device repair shops prefer to keep their service offerings general. Although the latter is a decent option, be on the lookout for shops with specific expertise and a long track record in the computer repair business.

Reviews and Customer Service

Finally, check into the reviews for an inside scoop on the workings and success of the computer repair shop. While some reviews may be skewed and fake – read each one with a grain of salt! – you may get a fairly accurate feel for how well the company services its customers. Regarding the area of expertise we mentioned earlier, be on the lookout specifically for positive computer repair reviews in the lineup. A “customer first” mentality – that’s what you’re after as you look for the best local computer repair shop for you.

While we hope you and your MacBook, Chromebook, or other computer are thriving, Cellular Zone is always here to offer you expert computer repairs! Check out our locations to find your closest Cellular Zone shop, and start your professional computer repair today!

Choosing the Best Local Smartphone Repair Shop

After the “bendgate” fiasco with Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ models, users have every reason to consider when they’ll next need a professional smartphone repair. Apple phones, like the iPhone 6 through the iPhone SE 2, have proven overheating and battery drain issues. Galaxy smartphones aren’t spotless, either, as Samsung revealed in a monthly update that every model since 2014 contains a major security risk. The most common smartphone repair was a cracked screen, according to a 2018 study, mainly because of the low durability of most glass phone screens. Even these most basic repairs could pack a punch to your bank account, so knowing who to call when you need an iPhone screen repair will save you a lot of hassle.

With this in mind, your computer mouse may already be hovering over a list of smartphone repair companies. Before you hit up the nearest and flashiest-looking store, however, be sure your local computer repair shop checks out against Cellular Zone’s authentication list.

How to Trade in Your Old Smartphone for Cash

The iPhone SE 2020 is here, and you’re ready. Or maybe you’ve been salivating over the Samsung Galaxy Note10 Plus. Your old phone is slowly giving up the ghost, or you’re just excited to upgrade. Whatever the reason, you now have to decide what to do with the old phone. You could try selling it yourself, or you could sell it to Cellular Zone for a much better price (and without a lot of the hassle). Before you sell your iPhone, Android, or other smartphone, though, make sure you follow these steps:

Backup Your Device

You don’t want your valuable (and possibly cashable) information in the wrong hands. Before you delete everything off your old iPhone or Android, be sure to transfer the data to your new device. Backing up your smartphone will ensure that the information you transferred to your new device is saved to the cloud. If you want to do this directly from your phone, select your name within your Settings, then tap “iCloud.” This will take you to the option of “iCloud Backup > Backup Now.” For an Android, this process may require a few more steps. First, check that Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Contacts have cloud backups toggled on in your settings. Another option for backing up important data is utilizing a service like Google Drive, or even G Cloud Backup. After you’ve successfully saved your information on the cloud, be sure to remove all accounts saved on your Android phone. While you may want to delete your main Google account last, you can still select “Accounts” within your settings and remove all the other accounts from your device.
Headphones

Unpair devices

Keeping your old Bluetooth devices paired to your smartphone can put you at risk. Those devices could also mean trouble if they continue connecting to your old device rather than your new one. Before selling your smartphone, be sure to disconnect and “forget” all other devices. To do this, bring your Bluetooth devices near your phone, then go to “Bluetooth” in your Settings. Next to each device listed, tap for information and select “Forget This Device.” While, like with the iPhone, your paired Android devices won’t connect to your out-of-range phone, it’s still a good idea to disconnect those Bluetooth headphones from your Android. In “Connected Devices” within Settings, tap the Settings gear icon next to each device and select “Forget.”

Sign out of the Cloud

You’re a few steps closer to handing in that old smartphone. Next, return to your settings and select “iCloud > Sign Out.” This will prompt you to “Delete from My [Device],” and will ask you to enter your Apple ID password. In order to sign out of iTunes, go back to the main page of your settings, and select “iTunes and App Store > Apple ID > Sign out.” For an Android smartphone, be sure to perform a factory reset, and even consider removing your SIM card. For the first step, head over to “Settings > System > Advanced > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).” While this option may turn up in different locations depending on each model, you can do this on most Android phones (like the Pixel, for example). For removing the SIM card, locate the SIM tray at the end of your phone and use a paperclip to pop the tray open. Remove the card and destroy it if you plan to buy a new one, or keep it for use in your new smartphone.
Unlock iPhone

Disable “Find My Phone”

For Android users, the “Android Device Manager” feature offers a neat method of maintaining control over your phone, even from a long distance, and locking it (or erasing all data!). While it’s important to disable this program if you’re selling your Android, make sure you’ve already backed up all information first. When you’ve completed steps 1-4, check out your account here and locate the “Security” section. You can manage all your devices from the “Your Devices” heading. Find the phone you’d like to sell and select “Remove.” iPhones allow users to disable this feature AND erase all content and settings in one fell swoop. Once in Settings, click “General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings,” then follow the next prompts until completion. This will allow your iPhone’s future owner to activate the smartphone, as well as keep them from accessing your private information. Yes, these steps can be time-consuming, but yes, they’re important! Logging out of and deleting account information is a sure-fire way to keep future users from causing issues or accessing content you’d rather keep private.
Locked phone security
Now, you’re looking to sell that smartphone – and at a decent price, if you want your money’s worth. We know some tech experts and smartphone gurus at FCellular Zone ready to inspect your device and offer top dollar (in cash!). Following the steps above will make sure this process saves you time, but we’re more than happy to help you in-store. Head over to our location today and trade your old Android, iPhone, or other smartphone for cash!

How to Choose the Best Laptop

It’s time to face the music: you need a new laptop. Your old one still turns on (yeah, the standards are that low now), and you’ve got some storage left, but you’re almost always waiting for something to load. Maybe yours has water damage, or just needs the kind of TLC that you’re too tired and busy to give it. Whatever the case, before you hit the stores running, take a moment to do some pre-buying prep. You could spend hours wading through factors, features, and functions, but let’s cover the essential three: utility, budget, and OS (operating system) and other specs.

UTILITY

You can’t decide how useful a laptop might be to you before you think through how you’ll use it. Are you a college student looking for an air-light option to tote between classes? Are you a frequent traveler? Or are you a newly minted #quarantine worker looking for maximum storage? Content creators and other designers will want to consider Retina displays such as the 16” display feature on the MacBook Pro line. Windows, however, can offer more software support for gamers. There is no official opinion on the “top brand”; it’s all relative to your needs.

A second aspect to utility is the literal flexibility of the laptop itself. While the conventional “clamshell” design pervades most of the industry, the newer 2-in-1 convertible models are catching on. Set it up tent-style and binge-watch your favorite show, or fold it back into a tablet form to work on a social media graphic – it’s unarguably a cool option.

OS and Other Specs

The main options for this feature are Microsoft and Apple, and you’ll have to pick your battles for each. Higher-priced at best (like the latest MacBook Air selling at $1000), Apple products still offer extensive battery life and various beneficial built-in apps. Windows, on the other hand, boasts a much more open-ended software and a platform for many business-related apps and programs.

Chrome OS gives a nice alternative to Windows 10, though. With all the basic features of a work laptop, some models include 1080p quality and highly functional keyboards. This OS, as well as Windows, offers touch screen capability, a significant function that leaves a black hole in Mac laptop features. Again, think about your needs: long work hours, collaborative business systems, heavy visual design work, or a combination of these might motivate your choice.

The laptop’s processor interprets your actions and carries them out, such as saving a file or use an application – a huge piece in the puzzle of laptop purchasing. Visualize your computer as a restaurant, and its processor as the waiter who takes your order and brings back the delicious food. So a newer processor means shorter wait times and more time for “eating.” As far as the processor goes, more expensive models use Intel’s Core i5 or i7. Expect AMD’s A-series if you’re looking to spend on a dime. If you’ve got a little more padding, you could be walking away with Intel’s high-end i9 core.

And when it comes to storage, don’t settle for anything less than 256GB. Going beyond 512GB – a great option for serious gamers – will certainly strain your wallet, but that may be the storage choice for you. Make sure you check whether the model you’re looking at uses an SSD or an HDD. Choosing an SSD (Solid State Drive) over an HDD (Hard Disk Drive) storage system makes a world of difference when you’re on the go or need to turn off your computer. While a power loss causes an SSD to lose its stored information, the HDD stores all of your data regardless. And even if the HDD might still be cheaper (though that’s changing), the speed of the SSD far outweighs any cumbersome prices attached to it. Long story short – SSD is your best bet.

BUDGET

And finally, let’s talk dollar signs. A couple hundred will get you a working device with some storage, but $1000+ will certainly guarantee higher specs and possibly a longer lifespan. Let’s check it out:

  • Economy ($350-$600):
Acer Computer

          Source: Canva

For this price, you’re looking at several notebook options decently packed with storage. The downside is the general lack of HD screen quality or long battery life.

  • Business ($600-$900):
Laptop

          Source: Canva

The Lenovo Idea Pad 530s exemplifies this category – higher resolution than economy class devices, as well as SSD. Overall aesthetic design is also higher-end with this class of laptops.

  • First Class ($900+):
Laptop

          Source: Canvas

This budget will bring you higher-end Apple laptops with greater portability and power. Think Apple MacBook Air with a high-res screen and a faster processor.

If you were looking for a simple answer – you won’t find one. Buying a new laptop is a relative choice, each option providing various features for different needs. We’d suggest drawing up a list of must-haves for your ideal device, cross-checking it with the info we offered here.

But maybe you’re not ready for quite a leap yet. If you’re looking to fix up the laptop you have now, head over to one of our stores so we can diagnose the issue. A simple keyboard or screen repair could restore you to a workable laptop. Our fast and professional repairs will have your laptop back to peak productivity in no time.
